Writing retreats provide uninterrupted time for female geoscientists to work on writing projects and to get to know other women geoscientists. They are held in late July or early August.
Application deadlines give preference depending upon your past GAIN involvement and academic position. After the deadline, you may still apply, but no longer have preference. To secure your place, a $200 deposit is required. (This can be waved in some circumstances, by contacting Mary Anne Holmes (mholmes2@unl.edu ) or Suzanne O’Connell (soconnell@wesleyan.edu) and explaining your circumstances. The deposit will be used to defray writing retreat expenses (~$1100/person). However you may apply to be reimbursed for mileage and airfare. Taxi charge may be covered. Rental cars will not be covered.
Participation will be limited to 28.
Until February 28, 2011, previous writing-retreat participants’ applications will be reviewed. We must have received your evaluations and publication list (NSF grants #620087 and #0620101) from 2010, if you participated last year.
Between February 28, 2011 and April 1 any U.S. woman geosciences faculty (adjunct, visiting, etc.) and her collaborators may apply.
After April 1, if space is available, any women geoscientist in academia in the U.S. (including senior PhD graduate students and post-docs) may apply.
In any of these categories, if you are working on a paper or proposal with someone who has not previously participated, your colleague may apply under your category. For example, if you are a graduate student and have not previously attended a writing retreat, but your co-author has, you will have preference until February 1. In each category, space will be filled in the order of completed application (including publication list) and receipt of deposit.
Dates: Sunday July 31 (~7 p.m.) to Friday August 5 (noon)
Location: The Connors Center, Dover, MA (http://www.bc.edu/offices/retreat/)
Applications: May be submitted any time. Acceptance preference will be given in the order of previous participation (described above) and receipt of $200 deposit.

If the cost is enough of a financial burden that you will not be able to attend, please contact either of the PI’s, Mary Anne Holmes (mholmes2@unl.edu) or Suzanne O’Connell (soconnell@wesleyan.edu) and explain your circumstances.
